Claude Muzard and Hervé Muzard's wines are fresh, aromatic, and with great finesse.
The top wines of the domaine are: Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Santenay Premier Cru Beauregard Cuvée du Lulu, and Santenay Premier Cru Clos de Tavannes.
The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 scored 93, the Santenay Premier Cru Beauregard Cuvée du Lulu 2018 scored 92, and the Santenay Premier Cru Clos de Tavannes 2018 scored 92 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018: "Offering up an inviting bouquet of pear, citrus oil and toasted nuts, framed by a deft touch of oak, Muzard's 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, deep and intense, with fine concentration, a bright spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. Tightly wound and energetic, this is very promising."
History
Claude Muzard and Hervé Muzard have been the winemakers at Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils since 1990. Claude Muzard is involved in cellar and commerce, while Hervé Muzard takes care of vineyards.
According to some papers on grape purchasing matters, the Muzards have been winegrowers in Santenay since 1645.
The estate was founded in the 1960s by Lucien Muzard. His eldest son, Claude Muzard, joined him in 1987, with Hervé Muzard three years later. Although their deep family knowledge of winemaking, they studied at Lycée Viticole de Beaune (Beaune School of Viticulture).
Claude Muzard and Hervé Muzard stopped selling wine in bulk and started bottling all the wines made at the domaine. Today 80 percent of wines are red, and 20 percent are white.
Today, the next generation of the Muzards, Capucine, Pierre and Constance, are becoming involved.
Approach
Organic
The vineyards of Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils are farmed according to non-certified organic principles.
The estate initially produced mainly red wines. Over the years, the range has expanded. The estate is located in Santenay, but the domaine also has vines in Maranges, Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault and Pommard. The winemakers of the domaine pay much attention to the farming, taking great care of the terroirs.
The white grapes are crushed, pressed for two hours, then lightly settled and transferred to barrels for fermentation. Claude Muzard and Hervé Muzard use 25 percent of new wood.
The red wine starts with a whole-bunch vinification following Muzard's senior approach. The grapes have been destemmed since 1996.
The winemakers use concrete vats equipped with temperature control. They have entirely replaced wooden vats. Tonnellerie Rousseau created a tank combining wood and stainless steel where vinification and maturation occur.
