Domaine de la Folie

About

Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie is located in Rully in the north of the Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy. The vineyards of the domaine cover 13 hectares, farmed according to the sustainable approach, without certification.

Clémmence Bouton and Baptiste Dubrulle are the winemakers of the domaine, who cultivate their vineyards with great respect to terroirs.

The domaine holds 3 Rully monopoles: Clos de Chaigne à Jean de France, Clos Saint-Jacques and La Folie.

The wines of the domaine are well-balanced, elegant and classic.

The top wines of the domaine are Rully Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques Blanc and Rully Cuvée Marey. The Rully Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques Blanc 2019 scored 92 and the Rully Cuvée Marey 2019 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Rully Premier Cru Clos Saint Jacques Blanc 2019: “From a steeper, stonier site comes the 2019 Rully Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated wine evocative of peach, mandarin, white flowers and spices. Lively and precise, this will develop nicely in the cellar.”

History

Domaine de la Folie has been managed by Clémmence Bouton and Baptiste Dubrulle since 2015. Clémmence Bouton comes from a winemaking family. The domaine was founded by her great-great-grandfather Étienne-Jules Marey. Étienne-Jules Marey’s daughter Francesca Marey married Victor Bouton and continued to develop the domaine. Later, the domaine fell on hard times and had nearly disappeared until Clémmence Bouton and Baptiste Dubrulle took over, and started to recover it. They have recently begun to renew essential equipment in the form of tractors, tanks and presses.

The name "La Folie" may refer to a fairy dance known as "la folia" after local reports of swirling lights at night or fairies dancing.

Approach

Sustainable

The vineyards of Domaine de la Folie are farmed according to a sustainable approach without certification.

The domaine makes 60 percent of whites and 40 percent of reds. All the vineyards are within the Rully appellation, including 3 monopoles.

Ageing is done in tanks.

On Bourgogne-info Clémmence Bouton explaines: “Here at La Folie we don’t use much oak. We’d like to focus on the terroir. The barrels are for the micro-oxidation, not for the oak flavours.” Baptiste Dubrulle adds: “As Clémence says, we don’t want a wine which is marked by wood. We work with coopers who make barrels where the wood is delicate and becomes well-integrated in the wine.”
