About
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is a sought-after estate with a great history. It owns 8 hectares of prestigious vineyards including Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru and the Grand Crus of Clos de Vougeot. The estate itself is located in Premeaux-Prissey. The vineyards’ treatment is organic, without certification. The current winemaker is Louis Meunier.
The top wines of the domaine are Vosne-Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaboeufs Premier Cru. The Vosne-Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2012 scored 95-97, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2012 scored 93-95, Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaboeufs Premier Cru scored 92-94 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker noted the Vosne-Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2012: “The crown jewel is the 2012 Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru that comes from the 0.50-hectare slither planted in 1922. It already boasts an enticing bouquet laden with luscious dark cherry and creme de cassis fruit, stupendous mineralite and exotic touches of blood orange and marmalade. The palate is silky smooth with razor-sharp tannins, once again superb mineralite and a sleek, sensual, quite piercing sorbet-fresh finish that lingers in the mouth much longer than the Clos de Vougeot. This is a sophisticated, modern take on the grand cru, one with panache and oozing class.”
The wines of the domaine are fabulous, rich, luscious and sophisticated.
History
At present, the domaine is managed by Louis Meunier and his parents, Sophie Meunier and Alain Meunier. Louis Meunier is gradually taking over the reins of the estate and for now, is responsible for the winery. Sophie Meunier and Alain Meunier succeeded Jean-Jacques Confuron in 1983.
The roots of the Confuron family go back to the 17th century, the reign period of King Louis the 14th. There are two main branches of the Confuron family - the first one of Jean Confuron and the second one of Joseph Confuron.
Jean Confuron had two sons - Jean-Jacques Confuron and Christian Confuron. Jean-Jacques Confuron married Andrée Noëllat. Their daughter, Sophie Confuron, married Alain Meunier.
Approach
Organic without certification since 199O
The viticulture of the domaine is organic but not certified as yet. Some of the vineyards are ploughed by horses to keep the soil vigorous.
In the winery, grapes are destemmed and given a cold pre-fermentation maceration with relatively high temperatures. After that, the fermentation process with solid punching down and pumping over is carried out. The wines maturation lasts for 15-18 months with 100 percent of new oak for the grands crus and 70 percent for the premiers crus.
