About
Domaine François Raquillet
Domaine François Raquillet is a 14 hectares large domaine, located in Mercurey, Côte Chalonnais, Burgundy. The vigneron in charge is Emmanuelle Raquillet, who farms the vineyards according to non-certified sustainable practices.
Emmanuelle Raquillet’s generous, gourmand wines are succulent and pleasure-bent but also possess levels of complexity and depth that distinguish them from many of their peers.
The top wines of the domaine are: Mercurey Premier Cru Les Naugues, Mercurey Premier Cru Les Veleys, and Mercurey Premier Cru Clos des Barraults.
The Mercurey Premier Cru Les Naugues 2016 scored 94, the Mercurey Premier Cru Les Veleys 2017 scored 93, and the Mercurey Premier Cru Clos des Barraults 2019 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Mercurey Premier Cru Les Naugues 2016: “I revisited the 2016 Mercurey Premier Cru Les Naugues from my own cellar, and while the wine is a touch more closed than when I tasted it last year, it's no less impressive, unfurling from the glass with a familiar bouquet of smoky berry fruit, cassis, grilled meats, dark chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping, with a concentrated core of succulent fruit, velvety structuring tannins and a precise, penetrating finish. My intention is to forget my remaining 11 bottles for a year or two, and I recommend readers do the same.”
History
Emmanuelle Raquillet, is the current winemaker of Domaine François Raquillet.
Emmanuelle Raquillet’s father, François Raquillet, began working in 1984 and took over the estate in 1990. He made significant changes to the working philosophy by reducing yields, introducing premium quality barrels and starting wine bottling at the domaine.
The estate operates fourteen hectares of vines in the Côte Chalonnaise and offers a diversified range of white and red wines. Since 2018, their daughter Jeanne Raquillet has joined her parents on the estate.
Approach
Sustainable
The vineyards of Domaine François Raquillet are farmed according to non-certified sustainable principles.
The meticulous work begins in the vineyard with rigorous pruning and disbudding and soil maintenance that promotes the balance of an ecosystem. The soils have been worked for several years already by ploughing and plant cover. At Domaine François Raquillet, the harvesting is done manually and then sorted at the table to select only the best grapes.
The reds are well-extracted, with good colour, aged in oak, typically with 30 percent of new wood.
