On Inside Burgundy, the Mercurey Premier Cru La Bondue Cuvée Mercurey Generation VII 2018 scored 90, Mercurey Premier Cru Clos L’Evêque 2019 scored 90, and the Mercurey Premier Cru La Bondue 2018 scored 90.
Jasper Morris’s tasting notes on the Mercurey Premier Cru La Bondue Cuvée Mercurey Generation VII 2018: “Generation VII reflects that Loïc Which he is. The grapes are taken from the oldest part of La Bondue, starting out in 500 litre new demi-muids, then racked to older barrel and just bottled. Black colour with purple rim. Huge density, lots of oak but the fruit is winning already. Very dark, not too smoky, liqueur cherries, excellent length. This is a successful example of a super cuvée, notwithstanding which some may prefer one of the less intense wines in the line-up.”
History
1870
Loïc de Surmain is the winemaker of Domaine de Suremain.
The domaine has been the family estate for seven generations. It has always been attached to Mercurey terroirs and has never spread any other appellations than Mercurey.
The domaine was founded in 1870 by Charles de Suremain.
Charles de Suremain's son, Edouard de Suremain put the Mercurey appellation on the map. It was acknowledged in 1923 but officially the Mercurey AOC was established in 1936.
In 1979, Yves de Surmain and his wife Marie-Hélène de Suremain joined the family estate and took over the complete management in 1993.
In 2005, their son, Loïc de Surmain succeeded Yves and Marie-Hélène de Suremain.
Approach
Sustainable
The vines of Domaine de Suremain are cultivated according to sustainable principles.
All vineyard work is done with respect to the environment and terroirs. The soils are ploughed, manured, and yields are controlled.
The young and old vines are harvested by hand to preserve all the peculiarities of the vintage.
The grapes are transferred in crates to the winery, sorted, destemmed and fermented with additional punching down. The fermentation lasts from 8 to 15 days, depending on the cuvée and the vintage. The temperatures are controlled by a heat or cold pump, but only if needed.
Maturation takes place in barrels with 10 to 15 percent of new wood and endures for nearly 14 to 18 months. Malolactic fermentation occurs during the maturation period. Racking is conveyed in the next autumn and is followed by bottling.
