About

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is located in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy. The estate owns 10.5 hectares of vines including monopoles Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée** La Romanée Grand Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes Premier Cru, and 15 cuvées from Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vougeot. The viticulture of the domaine has been non-certified biodynamic since 2008, certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Biodyvin since 2012.

The current vigneron is Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. His wines are devastatingly harmonious and focused, with wonderful delineation and purity of aromatics.

The top wines of the domaine are Vosne-Romanée** La Romanée Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Reignots, and Echézeaux Grand Cru. The La Romanée Grand Cru 2015 scored 100, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Reignots 2012 scored 96 - 98, and the Echézeaux Grand Cru 2012 scored 96 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the La Romanée Grand Cru 2015: “Tasted blind, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair's 2015 La Romanée Grand Cru is simply extraordinary, dominating a flight of great grands crus. The wine wafts from the glass with an extraordinarily complex bouquet in which notes of cherries, cassis and orange rind mingle with fragrant aromas of rose petal and Asian spices, complemented by deeper, more savory bass notes of grilled squab, espresso roast and smoked duck. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with amazing depth and dimension, juicy acids balancing a deep and concentrated core of fruit, and concluding with a long, reverberative finish. This is a powerful, even dramatic La Romanée that ranks as one of the pinnacles of this magical vintage.”

History

1815

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is owned by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair.

The domaine was founded in 1815, when Louis Liger-Belair, one of Napoleon's generals, acquired Château de Vosne-Romanée. Under his surveillance, the domaine was significantly extended. As Louis Liger-Belair had no direct heirs, he adopted his nephew, Louis-Charles Liger-Belair, who took over the domaine.

When the grandson of Louis-Charles Liger-Belair, Henri Liger-Belair, succeeded, the domaine was 60 hectares-large with holdings mainly in Côte de Nuits. In 1924 Henri Liger-Belair passed away, leaving his wife and ten children in charge of 24 hectares of vines.

In 1931, the wife of Henri Liger-Belair breathed her last. Two years later, the estate and its holdings were sold by judicial auction as the law required it if not all the children reached the age of majority. Two of the children, Just Liger-Belair and Michel Liger-Belair, joined to buy back La Romanée, Les Reignots and Les Chaumes. Unfortunately, Michel Liger-Belair didn't manage to redevelop the domaine as he died during the Second World War. His son, Henry Liger-Belair, followed in his ancestors' footsteps and joined the army in 1947, leaving the vineyards to the local sharecroppers. Despite that, he supported and developed Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair as much as possible.

His grandson, the current owner, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, started his path as a vigneron studying at the University of Dijon and obtaining diplomas in agricultural engineering, wine business and oenology.

In 2000 Louis-Michel Liger-Belair inherited Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. In 2002 the estate's holdings consisted of 1.5 hectares of family vines from Vosne-Romanée La Colombière, Clos du Château, Premier Cru Les Chaumes and of 1.6 hectares of purchased grand cru monopole La Romanée and a parcel of Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Reignots.

In 2006 Louis-Michel Liger-Belair caught the opportunity to rent 5.5 hectares from one of his former sharecroppers, the Lamadons.

In 2012 the premier cru monopole Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes was bought.

In 2015 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair celebrated its 200th anniversary.

Besides, since 2015, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair has taken сharge of a family historic brand - C. Marey & Cte. Liger-Belair. This label is exclusively used for the grands crus of Hospices de Beaune, sold at the annual charity auction.

Approach

Biodynamic without certification since 2008, Certified organic by Ecocert since 2012, Certified biodynamic by Biodyvin since 2012

The viticulture of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is certified organic and biodynamic by Ecocert under the label from Biodyvin since 2012. All the treatments are minimised and done by horses or with light machinery to respect soils' sensitivity. Since 2002, the soils have been ploughed only by horses to improve the exchange quality between roots and living elements.

Louis-Michel Liger-Belair believes that all the vines deserve the same care, whether a village appellation or a grand cru. In spring and early summer, phytosanitary treatments are done to prevent mildew development. Only herbal infusions, copper, sulphur, and other organic preparations are applied. Grapevine moths are treated with pheromone capsules called sexual confusion. As the bunches are at the closure stage, usually during the second week of July, treatments are stopped.

After harvesting, the grapes are transferred to the cellar in small perforated crates to avoid crushing, as Louis-Michel Liger-Belair greatly respects the integrity of the grapes.

In the cellar, the non-interventionist manner is preferred.

The grapes are sorted on a sorting table and destemmed in the whole bunch or partially, depending on the cuvée and vintage. Afterwards, the grapes are slightly sulphated, cooled to a temperature below 15 °C, and settled for a week. In a few days, fermentation starts naturally on ingenious yeasts. It lasts for nearly 10 days and finishes, if needed, with light chaptalisation, divided into two or three days depending on the vintage. During the vatting period, pumping over and some punching down is applied. As the fermentation is completed, the wines are devatted.

Pressing is done on a small vertical press and followed by blending of the free-run wine and pressed wine. Subsequently, the wine is settled for around 10 days in order to be clarified without racking. As the wines are clarified, they are transferred to the barrels by gravity.

Maturation takes place in new barrels made by three different coopers and from three different forests. Malolactic fermentation starts before or after the first winter. The wines stay in barrels without racking and any sulphur added until bottling.

Louis-Michel Liger-Belair uses 100% new oak for all wines except the white, where the share is around 30%.

The racking is conveyed 10 to 18 months after the harvesting, depending on the cuvée and vintage. The wines are sulphated and settled for 2 to 3 moon cycles in vats. Neither fining nor filtration is done before bottling.

Bottling is done by gravity. Corks are put one by one in a column, as it helps the cork's best end to contact the wine.

The wines are stocked and shipped two months after bottling. All the wines are sold in wooden cases, including a protective straw-packing and customized silk paper.

In order to minimise the risks of counterfeiting and for bottle authentication, since the 2015 vintage, as well as all the bottles of older vintages since 2017, all the back labels have been equipped with the SELINKO authentication and traceability system.
