About
Domaine Famille Paquet
Domaine Famille Paquet, previously Domaine des Valanges is a 30 hectares large domaine in the department of Saône-et-Loire, Mâconnais, Burgundy. The current winemakers, Jean-Baptiste Paquet, Mathieu Paquet and Camille Paquet, farm the vineyards according to organic principles. The vineyards of the domaine were certified organic in 2021.
The wines made at the domaine are gourmand but succulent, pleasure-bent expressions of the Mâconnais.
The top wines of the domaine are Saint-Véran En Crèches Cuvée Hors Classe, Saint-Véran Les Terres Noires, and Saint-Véran Les Cras.
The Saint-Véran En Crèches Cuvée Hors Classe 2015 scored 93, the Saint-Véran Les Terres Noires 2017 scored 92, and the Saint-Véran Les Cras 2015 scored 92 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Saint-Véran En Crèches Cuvée Hors Classe 2015: “The 2015 Saint-Véran En Crèches Cuvée Hors Classe, which comes from vines planted back in 1944 in Les Crèches and Les Terres Noires, has another impressive bouquet that is intense, rich but not overpowering, with scents of apple blossom, granite and oyster shells that exude outstanding delineation. The palate is very complex with light honeyed notes, very spicy for a Saint-Véran with veins of ginger and lemongrass. It fans out wonderfully toward the finish while retaining brilliant delineation and focus. This is nothing short of a brilliant Saint-Véran and it comes highly recommended.”
History
The current winemakers in charge of the domaine are three siblings, Jean-Baptiste Paquet, Mathieu Paquet and Camille Paquet.
Jocelyne Paquet and Michel Paquet founded Domaine des Valanges in 1980s. The estate owned only 6 hectares at the very start of its history.
In 2014 the Paquets expanded the vineyards with 2 hectares of Pouilly-Fuissé appellation and 10 more in Mâcon.
In 2016, the three sons, the second generation vignerons, took over the family property of 12 hectares. Camille Paquet is responsible for the cultivation of the vine and the vinification, while Mathieu Paquet and Jean-Baptiste Paquet do the marketing.
At the beginning of 2019, the vineyards of all the family members were merged. Since then, the wines are released under the single label “Famille Paquet.”
Approach
Certified organic since 2021
The domaine’s vineyards are farmed according to organic principles. The vineyards obtained the certification in 2021. However, the conversion to organic started in 2018.
Camille Paquet practices different pruning approaches. Each plot is worked according to its needs being ploughed or grassed using organic compost.
The fruits are machine-harvested and cold-settled for 12 hours. The grands crus are fermented in oak barrels with 10 percent new wood.
