About

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair is one of the oldest domains established in Nuits-Saint-Georges. It is known for its rich history and the high quality of its harvests. The winemaker of the domaine is Thibault Liger-Belair himself. The vineyards cover 9 hectares and are farmed according to organic certification, using biodynamic principles.

Top wines of the domaine are Richebourg Grand Cru, Nuits Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saints-Georges and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. Richebourg Grand Cru 2006 scored 96, Nuits Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saints-Georges 2016 scored 93-95, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 scored 92-94 by The Wine Advocate.

The wines of the domaine are well-balanced and elegant, with spicy flavours and rich aromas.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on Richebourg Grand Cru 2006: “What I experienced was a plethora of red and blackberries and spices; a black raspberry and cherry liqueur-like impression on a viscous, rich palate, but with tart fruit skin and salt adding invigoration; and a finish that opened up profound carnal and mineral vistas and left my palate with the impression it was glowing. Just over 14% alcohol is not in the least noticeable here. Firmly and seamlessly structured, energizing and penetrating, this monument to the vintage (even if it seems as though it dropped in from a different one) ought to be put away for half a dozen years at least and should perform well for at least twice that long. For me, this clearly eclipses the already outstanding 2005, which is a tribute to the rapid progress that this young vigneron has made. There are eight barrels (circa 200 cases) of it, incidentally, by Burgundian standards not really rare.”

History

1720

Since 2001, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has been managed by Thibault Liger-Belair, after taking back his family vines from various sharecroppers. In fact, he has created a new domaine under his own name. He inherited the vineyards in 1982 after the death of his father Xavier Liger-Belair.

The domaine was founded in 1720 by Claude Marey. Claude Marey, a squire, king's secretary, mayor of Nuit-Saint-Georges and owner of vineyards, founded the Claude Marey house in Nuits to sell his harvests of great wines.

Approach

Certified organic

The vines of Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair are cultivated using biodynamic practices under organic certification.

Horses are used to plough the vineyards where possible.

The grapes are sorted on a vibrating table before being destemmed and fermented without much punching down or pumping over. The oak barrels are maximum of 50 percent new, but the age of all barrels does not exceed 3 years.

On Burgundy Report making of the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 is described: “From Aux Charmes at the top of the hill, planted north-south, in front of the border between Latricières and Chambertin. Do all the vineyard work here. No pigeage in this vintage ‘as I think it makes the wine artificially large. Lots of millerandage and the stems were thick, so I reduced just the main trunk of the stems for about 40 percent of the clusters. 70 percent new oak, very light toast – only 7 to 8 minutes”.
