Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Pouilly-Fuissé en Bulands Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2002: “Consistently my favorite of Martine and Daniel Barraud’s Pouilly-Fuisses is their En Bulands Vieilles Vignes, and 2002 is no exception. Its profound nose displays an unreal concentration of minerals, pears, and spices. Lush, broad, and softly textured, this medium-bodied beauty combines fabulous precision with power, depth, refinement, and focus. White fruits, verbena, quinine, minerals, and hints of red currants can be found throughout its profound character as well as in its lime-tinged finish. This wine is a grand cru in all but name. Projected maturity: 2006-2014.”

History

1905

Domaine Barraud has been managed by Julien Barraud since 2014, assisted by his sister Anais Barraud. They are the fifth generation of the Barrauds. The history of the domaine starts in 1905, when Jean-Marie Barraud started his sharecropping business in Vergisson. In 1912 he bought his first parcels, which are still farmed at the domaine. In 1930's Jean-Marie Barraud was one of the first in the region to bottle the wine on his property. The first cuvée “Les Crays” appeared in 1947. In 1990, the house and the Clos de la Verchère were purchased and the initials DB appeared at this time on the label.

Daniel Barraud, Julien Barraud’s father is a member of the association GEST Beaune, an association invested in preserving terroirs, as the domaine’s vineyards have been always farmed with respect to the environment.

The moto of the domaine is: “Working well saves time”.

Approach

Artisan

The vineyards of Domaine Barraud are farmed in artisinal manner, respecting the earth, the grapes and its unique patrimony.

For the vines all the treatments are based on sulfur and copper sulfate and Guyot-Poussard pruning is conducted. The harvesting is done manually.

After the pneumatic pressing the must is transferred in a thermoregulated stainless steel tank to settle overnight. After that juices are moved to barrels by gravity. The yeasts are not used either in alcoholic or malolactic fermentations. Maturation lasts from 10 to 14 months, depending on the cuvée. The wines are then racked to the stainless steel tank. A light fining is conducted before the bottling.
