About

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is a 19th century family estate located in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy. Nowadays the domaine’s wines are produced by Alexandre Bernier.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds two monopoles: La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche.

The style of the wines is deep, intense with chalky minerality.

Top wines of the estate are: Romanée-Conti Grand Cru, La Tâche Grand Cru, and Montrachet Grand Cru. The Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2019 scored 100, La Tâche Grand Cru 1999 scored 100, and the Montrachet Grand Cru 1986 scored 100 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2019 are: “The 2019 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is a wine that brought tears to my eyes. Unfurling in the glass with scents of rose petals, black tea, wild berries, exotic spices, violets, bergamot and licorice, it's full-bodied, sensual and enveloping, with a broad attack that segues into a weightless but pungently intense mid-palate defined by striking energy and precision. Seamless and elegant, with melting tannins and mouthwatering acids, it concludes with an expansive, intensely floral finish. It's a monument in the making.”.

History

1869

At present Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families. The work at the domaine is managed by Aubert de Villaine, along with his nephew Bertrand, with Perrine Fenal, daughter of Lalou Bize-Leroy, as co-director. The wines of the estate are produced under Alexandre Bernier's control. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds the most diverse range of red-wine grands crus.

The roots of the estate go back to 1760 when the former Cros des Cloux vineyard was renamed with “Conti'' being added after it was purchased by the Prince de Condé.

Two of the most remarkable figures in Burgundy, both grown in passion for the vineyard's atmosphere - Jacques-Marie Duvaul and Sophie Bloshet married. In 1869, at the age of about 80 the couple purchased the Romanée-Conti estate. After their death the vineyards and the rest of the estate was saved as a family home. The daughters did not divide the holdings, but on the contrary - saved all the parts and transmitted them over 5 generations.

At the beginning of the 20th century the estate became a property of two descendants: Jacques Chambon and his sister Marie-Dominique Gaudin de Villaine née Chambon, the great-grandchildren of Jacques -Marie Duvault-Blochet.

The Gaudin de Villaine family remains to this day owner of half of the Civil Society of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: successively Edmond, Henri, Aubert, represent the descending and co-heir families.

In 1942 Jacques Chambon sold his shares to Henri Leroy, a wine merchant in Auxey-Duresses who passed them on to his daughters Pauline Roch and Marcelle Bize.

Under the control of a supervisory board, the estate is managed by two managing partners: Aubert de Villaine and Lalou Bize-Leroy, from 1974 to 1991, then Aubert de Villaine and Charles Roch, replaced on his death in 1992 by Henry-Frédéric Roch.

The mission that the domaine follows from generation to generation, to set up and perpetuate, within the framework of permanent reflection, the appropriate means to ensure that the grands crus for which it is responsible, among the greatest of Burgundy.

Since 2015 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vineyards have been laid on UNESCO World Heritage site.

Approach

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vinification is a work of art, the principles of winemaking remain unchangeable for centuries. The main idea of the domaine is to enhance the terroir of each wine as much as possible and to let the wine character shine.

Nowadays no modern winemaking techniques are applied. The work in the vineyard is carried out organically according to a moon calendar. The soil is ploughed by horses, and the harvest is gathered by a team of pickers. The sorting is also processed by hand. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti follows the old winemaking tradition, pressing is done by foot.

There are no tricks in the cellar, just a minimal intervention. The vinification is whole-bunched and carried out separately with a low amount of sulphur. The yeasts are entirely natural, the extraction of tannins is as gentle as possible and all the wines. The barrels are carefully chosen for each terroir. The wines are matured in new oak barrels, which after a single use, are sold off at half price.

The success of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines lies in such contributing factors: high-density plantings from 10,000 to 14,000 vines/ha, vine age (the average is around 40 years), the use of compost and the unique plant material. The winemaking team comments: “The drainage, the pedology, the depth of the soil, the microbiological activity and the way the air moves are all part of that. That's the miracle of Burgundy.”.

The holdings of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are seven vineyards: Montrachet (Chardonnay), Échezeaux (Pinot Noir), Grands Échezeaux (Pinot Noir), Romanée-Saint-Vivant (Pinot Noir), Richebourg (Pinot Noir), La Tâche monopole (Pinot Noir), Romanée-Conti Monopole (Pinot Noir).
