About
Domaine Bonneau du Martray
Domaine Bonneau du Martray is a new name for The Bonneau Véry that has been providing high-quality wine since the 18th century. It is located in Pernand-Vergelesses, resting on the Corton-Charlemagne facing the road that connects Corton-Charlemagne and Aloxe-Corton.
The domaine makes her wines based on the biodynamic approach that has been approved by the Demeter Biodynamic Federation in 2013. Fabien Esthor in tandem with Emmanuel Hautus manage today’s wine-making processes.
The top wines of the domaine are Corton En Charlemagne Grand Cru (white) and Corton En Charlemagne Grand Cru (red).
The Corton En Charlemagne Grand Cru 1973 (white), scored 97 and Corton En Charlemagne Grand Cru scored 95 (red) by the Wine Advocate.
Tasting the white wine, Corton En Charlemagne Grand Cru 1973, Rober Parker said: “...extraordinary wine, and it's hard to find as in this era only a fraction of the domaine's production was estate bottled. Soaring from the glass with a deep bouquet of buttered apples, toasted brioche, dried citrus rind, honeycomb and peat smoke, it's full-bodied, deep and muscular, with a textural attack, broad shoulders and striking concentration, underpinned by an incisive spine of acidity that lends this Corton-Charlemagne terrific structural integrity at age 40, and concluding with a searingly mineral finish.” The wine style is deep, muscular, elegantly textural and promising.
History
Before Fabien Esthor and Emmanuel Hautus, the domaine was managed by the Martray family.
Renné Bonneau du Martray started winemaking right after the French Revolution. The domaine was owned by his family for years and a few generations of dedicated winegrowers managed to save the vineyards in great condition. In 2017 a predominant part of the domaine was sold to Stanley Kroenke, who also owns Screaming Eagle (USA). .
Approach
Certified biodynamic by Demeter since 2013
The domaine practices biodynamics and was certified in 2013.
The grapes are hand-picked, first sorted in the vineyards, later completely destemmed. The vatting comprises traditional gentle pigeage, remontage and delestage. The wine is stored in French oak barrels for 12 months and ages for another 6 months in stainless steel tanks, before being bottled during a waning phase of the moon.
