History
The winemaker of domaine Jean Monnier is Nicolas Monnier, who succeeded his father, Jean-Claude Monnier. Jean-Claude Monnier still helps his son.
The domaine has functioned since the 18th century and winemaking has been kept in the family throughout sixteen generations. Today the family works on 16 hectares, making both red and white wines, which is not very common for this appellation.
The domaine owns a monopole in Pommard: Clos de Cîteaux within the boundaries of Les Epenots vineyard.
Approach
The vineyard holds 25 to 60 years old vines. Domaine Jean Monnier is one of the very few in the area to make close to equal amounts of red and white wines.
The white wines are kept in oak barrels with lees up to 18 months before bottling. The domaine uses cold maceration approaches for red wines before putting down to the oak barrels. The latter is a comparatively new method that enhances not only the wine taste but also its quality.
