About

Domaine du Comte Armand

Domaine du Comte Armand is a domaine with a long history starting back in the 19th century. The current winemaker is Paul Zinetti. The domaine is certified by Ecocert since 2005 and uses biodynamic approaches these days.

The domaine is located in Volnay and Auxey-Duresses, the finest sites of Pommard.

The top wines of the domaine are Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru 2016, Auxey-Duresses Village 2015, and Pommard Premier Cru Epenots Clos des Epeneaux.

The Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru 2016 scored 90-92 and Auxey-Duresses Village 2015 scored 89 - 91 by the Wine Advocate.

Tasting Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru 2016 Robert Parker said: “It has a clean and fresh black plum and red cherry-scented bouquet that is nicely defined. I appreciate the purity here, simmering undergrowth scents tucked just underneath the carapace of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit—cranberry and raspberry preserve—with a light tang of soy toward the vivacious finish and a pinch of black pepper on the aftertaste. There is not much of it, but what there is, is delightful.”

The wine style may be described as deep and fresh with black-fruit notes.

History

Paul Zinetti has managed the winemaking processes since 2014. Benjamin Leroux was his predecessor.

The Armand family started the Armand family started domaine du Comte Armand in 1826. Ever since the domaine was known as the domaine of gifted winemakers. Pascal Marchand, a young Québécois whose background had been the merchant marine, made the wines here from the 1985 to 1998 vintages inclusive. In 1999 he was replaced by Benjamin Leroux, who had worked part-time at the domaine since 1991 when he was 15.

After many years when the Clos des Epeneaux was the sole wine made at the domaine, further vineyards were acquired in 1994: Auxey-Duresses, Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru, Volnay and Volnay Fremiets.
