About

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is well-known for its legendary vintages and for one of the finest red wines made - Les Amoureuses. The estate owns 11 hectares in total, 9.8 hectares of which are of the grand crus - Bonnes Mares Grand Cru and Musigny Grand Cru, this includes 0.5 hectares of Musigny Grand Cru Blanc, the only place of Chambolle-Musigny where Chardonnay is permitted to grow.

The current winemaker of the DomaineComte Georges de Vogüé is Jean Lupatelli. The domaine grows vines according to the organic principles but without being certified.

The top wines of the domaine - Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru and Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses. Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1947 scored 100 and Les Amoureuses 2012 scored 98 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker described Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1947 - “The 1947 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru was unforgettable, unfurling in the glass with a kaleidoscopic bouquet of ripe red fruits, blood orange, rose petals, musk and warm spices that carried throughout the room as it sat in the glass. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's layered and enveloping, its rich core of fruit framed by velvety, melting tannins and ripe acids. The finish is resonant and expansive. Drunk from a bottle that had never left Burgundy, this numbered among the most emotive wines I enjoyed in 2019.”

History

1450

The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s history goes back to 1450 - when Jean Moisson set up the original building.

At present, the domaine is in the hands of Comte Georges de Vogüé’s granddaughters and for more than 30 years has been led by a team of François Millet - winemaker and Eric Bourgogne - wine grower. In 2021 François Millet retired, his worthy substitute is to be Jean Lupatelli.

The domaine blossomed particularly brightly when in 1925, Comte Georges de Vogüé became the wine grower.

Approach

Organic without certification

The vineyards run organically but without any organic certificate. The domaine combines guyot and cordon training.

Techniques applied in the cellar are adapted to fit the year. Winemaker François Millet appreciated the benefits of cold maceration, so it was widely used. Fermentation is conveyed with a temperature of 32-33°C. The wines are not punched down, except for the - Bonnes Mares. New oak usage consists of 15 percent for the village Chabbolle and 35 percent for the grands crus, sometimes even less.
