Domaine Violot-Guillemard
Domaine Violot-Guillemard is an old domaine with vineyards located in Pommard. The vines have been farmed according to organic approaches since 1999. The current winemaker is Joannès Violot-Guillemard.
The top wines of the domaine are Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru Les Epenots, and Pommard Premier Cru Les Fremiers.
The Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 2015 scored 95, Pommard Premier Cru Les Epenots 2019 scored 94, and Pommard Premier Cru Les Fremiers 2020 scored 92 - 94 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker said that the Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 2015 “...is a classic rendition of this great vineyard, opening in the glass with a deep bouquet of spicy, smoky dark berry fruit, candied peel and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered, with huge concentration, velvety tannins and bright acids. Cellar this for a decade and reap the considerable rewards.”
The wine style may be defined as medium to full-bodied, melting, ample and sensual, it’s seamless and enveloping, with an extended, fleshy core of fruit and lengthy, supple tannins and saline finish.
History
Joannès Violot-Guillemard succeeded his father, Thierry Violot-Guillemard in 2015. Joannès Violot-Guillemard is probably the sixth generation of winegrowers.
Domaine Violot-Guillemard was founded in the 19th century by Joannès Faivre, the very first winemaker of this domaine.
Thierry Violot-Guillemard joined the estate in 1978 and bought some extra plots in 2007.
Approach
Organic since 1999
The vines are cultivated according to the organic approach since 1999.
Joannès Violot-Guillemard strives for natural means of cultivation that won’t affect terroir much. Joannès Violot-Guillemard works on the domaine, constantly improving the winegrowing approach, experimenting with higher trellising of the vines rather than their hedging.
The technical work in the vineyards is well balanced.
During vinification, only natural ingredients are used, no artificial yeast. The winemaker carefully picks wood for the wines in order to produce high-quality wines.
