Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is located in the beautiful village Volnay, Burgundy. François Duvivier, as the winemaker, farms 16.5 hectares of vineyards biodynamically since 2009, but without certification. Being one of the oldest in the region, the domaine is famous for its wide range of highly-rated premiers crus.
Top wines of the domaine are: Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs, Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs, Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds, Volnay Premier Cru Champans. Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs 1920 scored 99, Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs 1953 scored 97, Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds 2010 scored 95-97, Volnay Premier Cru Champans 1953 scored 96 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker comments on Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs 1953: “The 1953 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is an ethereal, heavenly wine that enraptured its audience, including Guillaume d'Angerville who was tasting it for the very first time. Served blind against the '53 Champans no less, it has profound bouquet with vestiges of red cherry fruit intermingling with brown sugar and a light sea cave scent. The palate has astonishing precision and matière with marmalade, citrus lemon and orange zest notes, but it is more about the tension and energy contained in this Clos des Ducs. It actually seems to gain precision in the glass, as if adjusting the focus on a camera lens so that everything is perfectly clear. Glorious.”
History
Since 2005 the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has been managed by François Duvivier - manager, responsible for viticulture, vinification and ageing. He was appointed by the current owner Marquis Guillaume d’Angerville.
The history of the domaine started when Baron du Mesnil, sub-prefect of Autun, acquired the Domaine du Clos des Ducs located in Côte d' Or. In almost 100 years, the then-owner of the domaine Sem d'Angerville was one of the first in Burgundy to bottle his production at the property and sell it directly. He also was one of the initiators of appellation system development. The years have passed and the winemakers have changed, while the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has developed into the domaine with a worldwide reputation.
Approach
Biodynamic since 2009
The vineyards of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville have been cultivated biodynamically since 2009, but without certification. Soil and the plant are treated carefully, the yields are limited, due to a quality grape variety. Only natural products, based on horn dung, horn silica, herbal teas are used to fertilize vines. These natural fertilizers are spread according to the lunar calendar. After the harvesting, the grapes are thoroughly sorted. Entire destemmation is conducted. Then, if it is necessary, the grapes are cooled to 15°C before fermentation. The period of vatting lasts from 15 to 20 days, without exceeding 32°C at the end of fermentation. Pumping over is preferred to punching down. Ageing in oak barrels lasts about 18 months, to provide wines spending two winters in barrels. Commonly, 20 to 25 percent of new wood are used.
