Domaine de Bellene

About

Domaine de Bellene

Domaine de Bellene is the domaine with a long history. It practices organic approaches, supervised by the current winemaker, Nicolas Potel.

Domaine de Bellene has vineyards situated in Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Saint-Romain, Santenay, Volnay and Vosne-Romanée.

The top wines of the domaine are Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots, Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée du Cinquantenaire, and Beaune Premier Cru Les Grèves.

The Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots 2014 scored 92, Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée du Cinquantenaire 2017 scored 91, and Beaune Premier Cru Les Grèves 2014 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.

Tasting Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots 2014 Robert Parker said “...a lovely, sumptuous, generous bouquet with raspberry coulis, strawberry and cranberry aromas that yell at you, "Suchots!" The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, dark berry fruit here that is tightly wound at the moment, but there is good depth and once it finds its "groove," this should turn out to be one of Nicolas Potel's best wines from this appéllation.”

The winemaker style may be described as impressively structured, supple and partly saline.

History

2005

The estate is currently managed by Nicolas Potel, who founded it in 2005. The winery is located in a 16th-century building in central Beaune. Nicolas Potel started out as a négociant in 1996, bottling wines under his name. In 2004, the Cottin brothers of Labouré-Roi bought the business, but Potel remained in charge until 2009. By this point, he had already purchased his vineyards from the former Domaine Carementrant in Beaune, bottling them under the Domaine Nicolas Potel label. In 2008 this label was renamed Domaine de Bellene.

Approach

Organic

Domaine de Bellene cultivates old vines, located in the Premier Cru of Les Grèves. The vines are farmed organically, and the domaine's portfolio consists of predominantly old vines premier cru, village-level and regional wines. Harvest is picked up by hand, and vinification considers the use of yeasts without the sugar, acids, nutrients or enzymes. The wine is fermented in oak and steel barrels. The domaine’s bottles are designed to reduce the carbon footprint. They are lighter, sealed with wax rather than metal, and are labelled with recycled paper.
