About

Domaine François Buffet

Domaine François Buffet is an ancient representative of winegrowers in Pommard and Volnay, Burgundy. Marc-Olivier Buffet is in charge of domaine’s oenology and uses "integrated" growing practices, without certification. The domain covers the territory of 7.5 hectares and includes 15 different appellations.

Top wines of the domaine are: Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens and Volnay Premier Cru Les Taillepieds. Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 2012 scored 91, Volnay Premier Cru Les Taillepieds 2014 scored 90 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 2012: “The 2012 Pommard Premier Cru les Rugiens from François Buffet has an open-knit bouquet with bright red cherry and bergamot scents, a touch of scorched earth coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well-judged acidity. Perhaps it is just a little disjointed at the moment, but that should meld together. This is a well-crafted Pommard and it develops a pleasing spicy, black pepper edge on the finish that is very appealing.”

History

1692

In 2005 Marc-Olivier Buffet became in charge of wines and vines in Domaine François Buffet. His father Jacques Buffet who had run the domaine for more than 40 years, is the sixth generation of Buffet’s winemaking business.

The domaine was founded by Claude Buffet when he and his family moved to Volnay in 1692. Each following generation tried to improve the winemaking processes by implementing new equipment. In 1932 Léon Buffet bought a very modern device at that time: the destemmer buckets. At that time the family also had a négociant business under the name Ferdinand Buffet. In 1954 Léon Buffet’s son, François Buffet replaced horses with the Bobard high-clearance tractor manufactured in Beaune. During the time Jacques Buffet was in charge of the domaine, the new horizontal screw press arrived at the estate. The history of Domaine François Buffet is a story about passionate winemakers who constantly improve their approaches to stay among the best domains in the region.

Approach

"integrated" growing practices

Domaine François Buffet is farmed by the approach, known as an "integrated" growing practice, without certification. Weed-killers or anti-rot sprays are not used. The philosophy of the domaine is to limit the human influence on viticulture and rely on natural processes.

The harvesting is done by hand. The grapes for the young wines are being destemmed and for the leading premiers crus, approximately 20 to 30 percent of whole bunches are used. The wines are matured in barrels for 18 to 22 months. In summer one racking is conducted. The contents of new wood does not exceed 20 percent.
