About

Mouton Cadet

Mouton Cadet is a Bordeaux brand, founded by Baron Philippe. The holding has contracts with 452 Bordeaux winegrowers, which make up to 1300 hectares of vineyards across the Bordeaux region. The viticulture approach is sustainable and has been certified by HVE since 2020. The holding is a property of Philippe Sereys de Rothschild. Pierre Lambert is the winemaker.

The winery produces a variety of different wines, including white, rose and red ones. A couple of bio-wines are also crafted there.

On CellarTracker Mouton Cadet 1966 scored 94, the 1985 scored 90, and the 1987 scored 89.

Pierre Lambert, the winemaker, makes the following notes on the Mouton Cadet wines: “The sheer extent of the Bordeaux vineyard means that we can choose the best. Merlot predominates in Mouton Cadet red, underpinned by the tannic structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the elegance of Cabernet Franc. For Mouton Cadet white, Semillon and Muscadelle are combined with a significant proportion of Sauvignon, giving more fresh fruit and boxwood aromas and flavours. And while Merlot gives Mouton Cadet rosé its fresh red fruit flavours, a judicious amount of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon adds a pleasant tannic structure. Mouton Cadet Sauvignon Blanc, fresh and elegant, made entirely with a single grape variety, is a highly aromatic dry wine, lively and crisp.”

History

Philippe Sereys de Rothschild took over Mouton Cadet in 2018, assisted by Pierre Lambert, the cellar master.

The Rothschilds obtained the vineyards in 1922. Baron Philippe de Rothschild managed the property for 60 years.

In 1930 the first vintage of Mouton Cadet wine was released. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild succeeded the family wine business in 1988 after the death of her father, Baron Philippe.

In 2014 the three successors, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, inherited Mouton Cadet. Philippe Sereys de Rothschild became the Chairman and CEO of the family company in 2018.

Approach

Mouton Cadet wines are crafted according to sustainable principles and have been certified by HVE since 2020.

The vineyards are spread over Bordeaux region and include parcels in AOC Pauillac, AOC Saint-Émilion, AOC Graves, AOC Haut-Médoc, and AOC Entre-Deux-Mers.

The grapes from 1300 hectares of vineyards are gathered in a huge, 17 hectares large facility. The wines are vinified under the precise control of Pierre Lambert, who is the winemaker in charge.
