Weingut Kaufmann

Urban Kaufmann is the owner of Weingut Kaufmann. He is also the winemaker. The 20 hectares of vineyards are cultivated according to biodynamic principles. The winery has been certified by Demeter and is a member of Deutsches Barrique Forum, Slow Food, and Vinissima. Weingut Kaufmann had ben a member of VDP since 1994.

The top wines of the winery are Riesling trocken "GG" Hattenheim Wisselbrunnen, Spätburgunder "GG" Hattenheim Hassel, and Riesling trocken "Tell".

The Rieslings and Spätburgunders, crafted by Urban Kaufmann, are always extremely pure and clear.

Riesling trocken "GG" Hattenheim Wisselbrunnen 2020 scored 93, Spätburgunder "GG" Hattenheim Hassel 2019 scored 92, Riesling trocken "Tell" 2020 scored 91 by Gerhard Eichelmann.

Gerhard Eichelmann notes, “[...] the 2020 Rieslings from the Hattenheim winery are great and straightforward, which can go even further to the top of the Rheingau. [...] The Riesling "Tell" is more powerful, made from a selection of the best Hattenheim plots. [...] A wine with few fruit aromas apart from a hint of raw quince peel has a lot of grip and is very accessible. [...] Shortly after opening, it is substantial but clearly structured, showing an almost tangy texture [...] it even appeals to us a bit more than the Großes Gewächs from the Hattenheim Wisselbrunnen, which is much more closed at the beginning. [...] With more air, it is expanding its sparseness and the unique aroma with more fullness, maturity, concentration and depth. [...] If you give it a little time, a delicate, creamy texture emerges that offers a small preview of the future of this wine, which is likely to have an enormous shelf life.”

History

Urban Kaufmann, a Swiss, took over the Hans Lang winery in Hattenheim in 2013. A new Vinothek was completed in the summer of 2016. The winery obtained its current name, Weingut Kaufmann, in 2017.

Approach

Biodynamic, certified by Demeter

The vineyards of Weingut Kaufmann are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified by Demeter. Previously the winery has been certified organic by EU-Bio.

Weingut Kaufmann is a member of Deutsches Barrique Forum, Slow Food, and Vinissima. The winery has been a member of VDP since 1994.

The parcels are scattered across Hattenheim and are planted with such grape varieties as Riesling (75 percent), Spätburgunder (15 percent), Weißburgunder (5 percent), Grauburgunder (3 percent), and Chardonnay (2 percent).

In 2009, Urban Kaufmann converted the entire business to organic farming, certified by Demeter since 2017. The wines are mainly aged in stainless steel but sometimes in oak barrels of different sizes.
