About

Weingut Wegeler

Weingut Wegeler is located in Oestrich-Winkel, Rheingau. The winery in Oestrich-Winkel is their main site, though Wegeler also has a location in Assmannshausen and one in Bernkastel. The Rheingau estate is 41.40 hectare, while the one in the Mosel is 12 hectares. In addition, there are around 3 hectares of Spätburgunder from the Krone winery in Assmannshausen. Norbert Breit is the manager of the Mosel estate, while Michael Burgdorf manages Rheingau. Ralf Franzen, the Wegeler-Drieseberg family, and Richard Grosche are the owners of the winery.

The vineyards are cultivated according to sustainable principles, and the winery is a member of the EcoStep and Wine in Moderation. The Rheingau site is one of the founding members of the VDP and the Mosel site became a member of VDP in 1999.

The winery's top wines are Riesling Bernkastel Doctor VDP. Grosses Gewächs, Riesling trocken Geheimrat "J", Assmanshäus Höllenberg VDP. Grosses Gewächs

In the past, the winery mainly produced sweet and noble sweet wines. Still, dry wines have become increasingly important in recent years, making up two-thirds of the production sold through restaurants and specialist retailers. The wines are firm and lasting, accessible even when young, but they also mature well.

Riesling Auslese Bernkastel Doctor 2020 scored 94, Riesling Spätlese Bernkastel Doctor 2020 scored 92, Riesling Spätlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2020 scored 91, and Riesling trocken "GG" Wehlen Sonnenuhr 2020 scored 91 by Gerhard Eichelmann.

Gerhard Eichelmann notes, “[...] The Bernkasteler Riesling is firm and gripping, fragrant, taut, and racy with play, a little fizz, and a lot of substance. Then it goes seamlessly to the top. The "Grosses Gewächs" from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is quite open with notes of yeast, pomaceous fruit, and a touch of citrus and herbs has a spicy, taut, classy effect in the mouth, has a long finish and is so approachable that one likes to drink it. [...] The Spätlese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr shows a wonderfully fine, cool, stimulating fruit with hints of Mirabelle plums and sweet apples, has a classy effect with a light glaze and is superbly balanced. [...]"

Riesling Auslese Bernkastel Doctor 2017 scored 97+, Riesling Auslese Wehlen Sonnenuhr 2017 scored 96+, and Riesling Spätlese Bernkastel Doctor scored 95+ by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker notes, “The 2017 Bernkastel Doctor Riesling Auslese displays a concentrated, intense and tropical-scented bouquet with flinty aromas intermixed with fine raisins. This is a racy, gorgeously lush and salty-piquant Auslese on the palate with a long, intense, super concentrated and structured finish. There are grapefruit flavours on the juicy-aromatic aftertaste. This highly refined and unashamed gorgeous Auslese is far too young and should be kept for at least a decade or even two. It needs a lot of imagination to get an idea of where this 2017 Doctor is going, the future is doubtlessly great! Tasted in March 2019.”

Robert Parker notes, “The 2016 Rheingau Riesling trocken Geheimrat "J" shows a beautifully intense and complex, finely flinty/mineral bouquet of ripe white and yellow fruits and crushed stones. Super elegant on the palate, with intense, ripe and concentrated but also lush and elegant fruit, this is a highly complex, sustainably saline and tensioned Riesling with great expression and finesse. Stimulating and persistently saline on the finish, 2016 is perfect for drinking now. Luckily enough, the wine has just been put back on the price sheet. 12.5 percent stated alcohol. Natural cork.”

History

1884

Ralf Franzen, the Wegeler-Drieseberg family, and Richard Grosche are the owners of Weingut Wegeler. Norbert Breit is the manager of the Mosel estate. Michael Burgdorf directs the Rheingau estate, assisted there by the winemaker Andreas Holderrieth.

Julius Wegeler achieved great success in the international wine trade in the middle of the nineteenth century and bought his own vineyards in the Rheingau in 1882. Being the president of the German Winegrowers' Association (WBV) for 12 years, Julius Wegeler got the honorary title of Geheimrat. He acquired holdings in the Mosel region in 1900 and became the largest holder of vines in the famous Doctor vineyard including a historic cellar built in 1650 where all the older vintages are being stored today.

The Rheingau site is one of the founding members of the VDP and the Mosel site became a member in 1999. In 2007, an intense cooperation with the Weingut Krone in Assmannshausen was started. Assmannshausen is a Rheingau village especially famous for its Spätburgunder vineyards. The history of the Krone winery goes back to 1860, and it is known for its natural stone cellars. In 2014 the winery became the Wegeler family's property.

Approach

Sustainable, member of Wine in Moderation

Weingut Wegeler has vineyards in the best locations of the middle of the Mosel, including Bernkasteler Doctor (partly with more than 100 years old, ungrafted vines), Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich. These parcels are planted exclusively with Riesling grapevines. The Bernkastel-Kues vineyards consist of 90 percent Grosse Lage (Grand Cru), while the Rheingau sites are 70 percent Grosse Lage.

The Krone estate in Assmannshausen has most of their vines planted in Grosse Lagen. The parcels there are predominantly planted with Spätburgunder, as well as small parts of Riesling and Weißburgunder.

Geheimrat “J” was first produced in 1983 and has been the top dry Rheingau wine ever since. It has no vineyard identification, but instead is created from 15 different Rüdesheim, Geisenheim, and Oestrich-Winkel vineyards, classified VDP. Große Lage. A meticulous hand-harvesting followed by long maturation on the fine lees results in a wine of excellent quality.

The winery is a member of VDP, EcoStep and Wine in Moderation. Sustainable cultivation practices are implemented in the vineyards.
