About

Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno is located in Monforte d'Alba, Piedmont. Roberto Conterno is the current owner and winemaker of Giacomo Conterno winery.

The Rare Wine Co. says: "The wines he [Giacomo Conterno] made were the quintessence of "traditional" Barolo: rich, powerful, massively structured, and capable of a long development in bottle."
The top wines of the domaine are: Barolo Riserva Monfortino, Barolo Cascina Francia, and Barolo Arione.
The Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2004 scored 100, the Barolo Cascina Francia 1990 scored 98, and the Barolo Arione 2017 scored 97 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2004: "The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is drop-dead gorgeous. I have tasted the wine multiple times from barrel and three times from bottle and never been anything less than blown away. The 2004 is a subtle, layered Monfortino that captures the sheer elegance and finesse of this great vintage. It is sweet, perfumed, silky and utterly mind-blowing. From barrel it has always been a 100 point wine, but it has just been bottled and naturally a bit closed in on itself. Still, with some time in the glass its silky, perfumed fruit and dazzling class come to life. The 2004 is remarkably harmonious for such a young wine. Readers will have much fun debating which is the greatest Monfortino of recent years. Could it be the 1996, 1999 or 2002 for their huge structure and classicism? Or, is it the 1997 for its opulence? What if the dark horse 1998 and 2000 steal the show? Personally, I adore the 2001 and 2004 for their completeness, but the 2004 is the sexiest of them all. Sadly, 2004 is also the year Giovanni Conterno passed away, but one can't escape the feeling his spirit lives in this wine. Kudos to Roberto Conterno and his team for this magnificent, thrilling Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2044."

History

Roberto Conterno manages Giacomo Conterno winery these days. He is the owner and the winemaker.

When Giacomo Conterno, the estate's founder, served in World War I, Barolo wines were sold in cask or demijohn, meant for early drinking. However, after the war, Giacomo Conterno decided to change it and work on Barolo, which could age well. Barolo Riserva 1920 was his first wine.

Throughout the 20th century, Giacomo Conterno and his son, Giovanni Conterno, worked a lot on the creation of Barolo. Their Barolo wines were made from purchased grapes before 1974 when they acquired the Cascina Francia vineyard. It was a worthy purchase because they've given up buying fruits since then.

Giovanni Conterno passed away in 2004, and that was the year his son, Roberto Conterno took over the winery.

Approach

Roberto Conterno follows his father's winemaking approaches at Giacomo Conterno winery, which he owns now. Everything he does at the vineyard has much respect for his father, Giovanni Conterno. Giacomo Conterno holds vineyards in Barolo, Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba.

Some new technology is used at the vineyards for sorting and destemming, and a new bottling line helps cork the wine intact.

The wine is aged slowly. Usually, it takes from two to seven years, depending on the grape variety, to release the wine.

Monfortino wine, the product of drastic temperature changes throughout fermentation, followed by 6 to 8 years in barrel - is the best expression of the Nebbiolo grape. Along with Barolo Cascina Francia, these wines became the quality measure for the other regional winemakers and beyond.
