About
Château d'Aiguilhe
Château d'Aiguilhe is a 90 hectares large property in Saint-Philippe-d’Aiguille, Castillon, Bordeaux. The vineyards are farmed according to sustainable principles and are HVE Level 3 certified. Stephan von Neipperg is the owner.
The winery crafts three wines from the AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux: Château d'Aiguilhe, Le Blanc d'Aiguilhe, and Seigneurs d‘Aiguilhe.
The wines produced at Château d'Aiguilhe are plump, always rich fruit, and with a searing rip of fresh minerality.
The Château d'Aiguilhe Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2005 scored 93; 2019 scored 92; the 2018 and 2017 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.
The Château d'Aiguilhe Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Blanc 2021, 2019, and 2018 scored 91; 2016 scored 90 - 92; 2015 scored 89 - 91 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Château d'Aiguilhe Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2003: “From the famous family of Comte de Neipperg, the 2005 D’Aiguilhe is sensational and may be one of the best cuvées I have ever tasted from Neipperg and his Côtes de Castillon estate. This wine has an opaque purple colour and loads of Christmas fruitcake, liquorice and crushed chalk along with plenty of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich, still structured and tannic, but super-concentrated, this is an amazing effort in 2005. Give it another several years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20 years.”
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Château d'Aiguilhe Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Blanc 2021: “Just bottled a week before my visit, the 2021 d'Aiguilhe Blanc is a medium-bodied, tangy and incisive wine evocative of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit and freshly baked bread. Seamless and penetrating, it derives from a late-ripening site on the limestone slopes of the Côtes de Castillon that has always produced an unusually chiseled, mineral style of white Bordeaux.”
History
Stephan von Neipperg has been the owner the owner of Château d'Aiguilhe, since 1998. Stéphane Derenoncourt is the consultant.
The history of the estate goes back to the 13th century, but not much has been left since that time. Throughout the 19th century, the size of the vineyards reached 400 hectares but gradually decreased to the current extent.
The cellar renovations were finished in 2015. The cement vats were added to the wooden ones already in place.
The latest vineyard extension was in 2017 with the purchase of 34 hectares.
Stephan von Neipperg also holds Château Canon-la-Gaffeliére (Saint-Émilion), Château La Mondotte (Saint-Émilion), and Clos de l’Oratoire (Saint-Émilion).
Approach
The 90 hectares of Château d'Aiguilhe vineyards are used for the production of three wines. The proportions vary each year depending on the harvest quality and the tastings. Seigneurs d‘Aiguilhe (2nd wine) is made of the fruits from younger vines, and Le Blanc d'Aiguilhe is crafted from 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc.
The vineyards are farmed according to sustainable principles and are HVE Level 3 certified.
The property of Château d'Aiguilhe includes extra hectares with copses, woods, hedgerows and grassland, making 140 hectares in total. The additional hectares contribute a lot to the natural biodiversity.
The parcels are located on the limestone plateau, with a mix of shallow clay and limestone soils. The vineyards are planted with Merlot (80 percent) and Cabernet Franc (20 percent).
In the cellar, a mix of cement and wooden vats along with stainless steel tanks are used.
Malolactic fermentation is done in barrels (half of which are new). No processes are rushed, so all the fermentations are rather long.
Ageing for most years is carried out in oak: again, half is new (down from 80 percent a few years ago). Light fining and filtration in some vintages.
