Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Riesling TBA Berg Roseneck Rüdesheim 2017: “The 2017 Berg Roseneck Trockenbeerenauslese offers a clear and concentrated nose with straw and citrus fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a viscous, round and piquant, highly concentrated and sweet but elegant and electrifying TBA with a long and salty, stimulating and promising finish. Exciting and made for generations to come. Tasted in August 2019.”
History
1744
Weingut Leitz is the property of Johannes Leitz. He is also the winemaker, assisted by Manuel Zuffer in the cellar.
The winery was founded in 1744. However, the estate and its winemaking facilities were destroyed during World War II. Josef Leitz, Johannes Leitz’s grandfather, was the man to rebuild the estate.
Johannes Leitz’s father, Antonius Leitz, was running the winery for a short time but died young in 1966. His wife kept winemaking as a side business. Johannes Leitz took over the management in 1985, right after completing his training as a master winemaker. Johannes Leitz started with 3 hectares of vineyards but gradually extended it to its current size.
In 2011, Gault Millau, the french restaurant guide, recognised Johannes as “Winemaker of the Year.”
Approach
The parcels of Weingut Leitz are scattered across Rheingau. The best vineyards are located in Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland, Berg Kaisersteinfels, and Rosengarten. Weingut Leitz has also been a member of VDP since 1996.
After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, vinified and aged on the lees. Starting from 2017, the winery's top wines are vinified in large oak vats for 15 to 17 months.
